PHYSICAL EDUCATION CURRICULUM OVERVIEW

KG1/Reception Year N/A                                                                        IN ALL AREAS OF THE CURRICULUM, THE FOLLOWING OBJECTIVES APPLY:- 1 ACQUIRING AND DEVELOPING SKILLS.  2  SELECTING AND APPLYING SKILLS, TACTICS AND COMPOSITIONAL IDEAS.         3 KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING OF FITNESS AND HEALTH.   4  EVALUATING AND IMPROVING PERFORMANCE.
KG2/Year1 DANCE-  basic body action and movement, short folk dances.  GAMES ACTIVITIES-  throwing, catching and other basic game-playing skills, net games and fielding games.  GYMNASTIC ACTIVITIES-  investigate movement, stillness and using space safely, basic gym actions using floor and apparatus.  ATHLETIC ACTIVITIES-  running, jumping, throwing activities, challenges, competitions, experimentation with different ways of travelling, throwing, jumping, increasing awareness of speed and distance. 
Grade1/Year2 OUTDOOR AND ADVENTURE ACTIVITIES-  simple orientation activities using maps and diagrams, physical challenges and problem solving, safety.  DANCE ACTIVITIES- create and perform short dances that communicate different moods, feelings and ideas.  GAMES ACTIVITIES-  improve and apply basic skills in games, using space to avoid opponents, keep the ball and score points.  GYMNASTIC ACTIVITIES-  increase range of basic gymnastic skills, create simple sequences of actions.
Grade2/Year3 DANCE ACTIVITIES-  perform dances, focusing on creating, adapting and linking a range of dance movements, traditional, social, historical dances.  INVASION GAMES-  outwitting and scoring from opponents, skills in finding and using space to keep the ball, basic court setup and rules.  NET/WALL GAMES-  skills necessary, ball direction and targeting, skills to increase difficulty for opponent.  STRIKING/FIELDING GAMES-  hitting the ball, targeting, scoring runs, fielding techniques.  GYMNASTIC ACTIVITIES-  create sequences changing level and speed.
Grade3/Year4 ATHLETIC ACTIVITIES-  development of good basic running, jumping and throwing techniques, setting challenges for distance and time.  OUTDOOR AND ADVENTURE ACTIVITIES-  read and follow different maps and symbol trails, trust and communication activities.  DANCE ACTIVITIES-  create characters and narrative through movement and gesture.  INVASION GAMES- simple attacking tactics using a range of equipment and skills, organisation of defence.   GYMNASTICS-  improve quality of movement to produce tension , extension, plan and perform sequences, develop flow.
Grade4/Year5 DANCE ACTIVITIES- different styles of dance and dancing with others, create and perform.   INVASION GAMES-  develop skilful attacking and team play, explore ranges of defence.  GYMNASTIC ACTIVITIES-  create longer sequences to perform, learn wider range of actions.  ATHLETIC ACTIVITIES-  technique understanding, setting targets, improving performance in running, jumping and throwing.  OUTDOOR AND ADVENTUROUS ACTIVITIES- develop orienteering and problem solving skills, build trust and team work.
Grade5/Year6 STRIKING AND FIELDING GAMES- develop range and quality of skills in batting, bowling, fielding.  NET/WALL GAMES- develop range and quality of skills in racquet games.  DANCE ACTIVITIES- focus on using different visual images in order to compose and perform dances.  GYMNASTIC ACTIVITIES- knowledge of compositional principles- variation in speed, level, direction, linking actions, apparatus and sequencing.  INVASION GAMES-  improve defending and attacking play in football or hockey, netball or rugby, basketball.
Grade 6/Year 7 ATHLETICS ACTIVITIES- DEVELOPMENT  LEVEL- improve running, jumping and throwing skills, specific techniques, technical proficiency.  DANCE ACTIVITIES- DEVELOPMENT LEVEL-  explore different types of dance and develop knowledge and understanding of composition, communicating choreographic intention.  NET/WALL GAMES- DEVELOPMENT LEVEL-   understanding tactics, improving techniques to play more effectively and consistently.  OUTDOOR AND ADVENTUROUS ACTIVITIES-DEVELOPMENT LEVEL- focus on developing and using new skills and techniques. 
Grade 7/Year 8 GYMNASTIC ACTIVITIES- DEVELOPMENT-  focus on developing stability when holding own body position and when supporting a partner,  incorporating agility and vaults into sequences.  INVASION GAMES- DEVELOPMENT-   focus on development of team attacking and defence strategies and techniques, develop effectiveness of play.  STRIKING AND FIELDING GAMES- DEVELOPMENT-  develop understanding of game tactics, improving techniques in order to implement these tactics.
Grade 8/Year 9 DANCE ACTIVITIES -INTERMEDIATE - develop knowledge of dance style and forms, focusing on a range of themes that give rise to different types of dance eg. Abstract, comic, dramatic and narrative. ATHLETIC ACTIVITIES- INTERMEDIATE- use knowledge of athletic events, strategies and techniques to enhance performance and fitness.    NET/WALL GAMES- INTERMEDIATE- demonstration of more confident game technique and confidence, using combinations of strokes and shots, essential elements of attack and defence.
