HUMANITIES (GEOGRAPHY) CURRICULUM OVERVIEW

KEY AREAS OF STUDY

KG1/Reception N/A
KG2/Year1 AROUND OUR SCHOOL/THE LOCAL AREA-  immediate surroundings, jobs, leisure, changes, land use.  HOW CAN WE MAKE OUR LOCAL AREA SAFER?-  cars, road safety, parking.  WHERE IN THE WORLD IS BARNABY BEAR/PEPPY PANDA?-  maps, learning about other countries and places.
Grade1/Year2 AN ISLAND HOME- using a story book to develop children's understanding of geographical features, people, places, environment.  GOING TO THE SEASIDE-  how places have evolved over time-historically and geographically.  GLOBAL EYE-  a study of eye problems in less economically developed countries, recycling.  A CONTRASTING LOCALITY OVERSEAS-  comparison of own locality to another with regards to housing, school, food etc.
Grade2/Year3 INVESTIGATING OUR LOCAL AREA-   land usage, jobs, services, changes.  WEATHER AROUND THE WORLD-  link between weather and tourism around the world, similarities and differences compared to where we live.  WHAT'S IN THE NEWS?-  local, national, international news and weather reports.  HOW CAN WE IMPROVE THE AREA WE SEE FROM OUR WINDOW?- features, quality of environment, the future. 
Grade3/Year4 IMPROVING THE ENVIRONMENT-  improvement of environment and environmental issues.   VILLAGE SETTLERS- how settlements develop over time, evidence of such, using maps, designing own village.   HOW AND WHERE DO WE SPEND OUR TIME?-  leisure, recreation, working time within the settlement theme, surveys.  A VILLAGE IN ______- children study a less economically developed country, homes, school, work, trade, similarities and differences.
Grade4/Year5 WATER-  where is water found locally/globally?, how does it get to where it is needed/, who uses it?, who owns it?, who pays for it?, is it all useable? A CONTRASTING LOCALITY -  study a locality that contrasts with own local area, similarities and differences.  LOCAL TRAFFIC-AN ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUE-  traffic improvements schemes, identifying need, views for and against.  SHOULD MAIN STREETS BE CLOSED TO TRAFFIC?- collect and analyse information and use it in a decision making process.
Grade5/Year6 INVESTIGATING RIVERS-  water cycle, erosion, transport and deposit, landscape features made this way.  THE MOUNTAIN ENVIRONMENT-  what it is and where it can be found, weather comparison, effect of tourism.  INVESTIGATING COASTS-  main land uses on a coastline, features, factors affecting coastlines, effect of wave action and human activity, development management.
Grade 6/Year 7 MAKING CONNECTIONS-features/characteristics of own area. PEOPLE EVERYWHERE-population, settlement types, population growth, structure, distribution.  RIVERS-investigation of a river and its valley and the changes that take place downstream.  FLOOD DISASTER- how do people cope?, effects and impacts of flooding around the world, responding to natural disasters. ECONOMIC ACTIVITY- recognising developments in secondary and tertiary industry. EXPLORING THE UK- perceptions of, and links to, people from other countries.   
Grade 7/Year 8 COASTAL ENVIRONMENTS-  geomorphologic patterns/processes, weathering, environmental management.  PEOPLE EVERYWHERE- settlements, Viva Espana. WEATHER PATTERNS OVER EUROPE-  forecasts, climate graphs, satellite images, interpreting weather maps. TOURISM - GOOD OR BAD?- changing patterns, economic development effects, social, economic, environmental costs, sustainability, management. LIMESTONE LANDSCAPES-  patterns/processes associated with these landscapes, quarrying.  WORLD SPORT- location knowledge, map work.
Grade 8/Year 9 THE RESTLESS EARTH- earthquakes, tectonics, volcanoes. WHAT IS DEVELOPMENT?- how do we measure it? World patterns, quality of life.  COMPARING COUNTRIES- perceptions, similarities, differences.  CAN THE EARTH COPE?- ecosystems, population, resources, biomes, global futures.  LOCAL ACTION-GLOBAL EFFECTS- investigate conflict between economic activity and conserving the environment and resources.  INVESTIGATING BRAZIL- location, character, physical and human processes that shape a country, evaluation of development.
