ART CURRICULUM OVERVIEW

KEY AREAS OF STUDY

KG1/Reception NOTE: ALL UNITS OF WORK ARE DIVIDED INTO 3 MAIN AREAS.   1  EXPLORING AND DEVELOPING IDEAS.                           2 INVESTIGATING AND MAKING.   3  EVALUATING AND DEVELOPING WORK.                                                                                  Familiarity with materials and development of fine motor skills.
KG2/Year1 SELF PORTRAIT- investigate range of drawing materials, mixing and using colour in a painting.  INVESTIGATING MATERIALS- natural/man-made, weaving, colour and texture in textiles. SCULPTURE- shape, form, texture, sensory qualities, kinds of sculpture, arranging materials for relief collages.    
Grade1/Year2 PICTURE THIS-  recording observations using a variety of methods including photography and collage, illustrators.  MOTHER NATURE-DESIGNER-  explore line, shape, colour and texture in natural forms as a basis for textile design/collage/applique.  CAN BUILDINGS SPEAK?- prints/rubbings of shapes/patterns, relief sculpture.
Grade2/Year3 PORTRAYING RELATIONSHIPS- composition skills to make double portraits of themselves and their relationship with another person.  INVESTIGATING PATTERN- patterns in textiles from different times and cultures, stencilling.  CAN WE CHANGE PLACES?- use shape, form, colour, pattern to make a maquette of a sculpture using ideas, methods and approaches of others.
Grade3/Year4 VIEWPOINTS- creating atmosphere from different viewpoints, printmaking, ideas, methods, approaches. TAKE A SEAT- exploration of the design of chairs.  Examples of the past and other cultures as inspiration for own designs.  JOURNEYS- communication using signs, symbols and metaphors using mixed media techniques- drawing, painting, collage, print-make
Grade4/Year5 OBJECTS AND MEANING- select, arrange and present objects in still-life, study of colour, tone and composition.  CONTAINERS- develop own vessel design and build a 3D form, using cultural stimuli and work of different ceramists.  TALKING TEXTILES- make a 2/3D textile work based on a familiar story/legend/myth using a range of techniques/materials to create pattern/texture.
Grade5/Year6 PEOPLE IN ACTION- exploration of conveying movement using different methods/techniques.  WHAT A PERFORMANCE- investigation of headwear/costume from different times/cultures.  A SENSE OF PLACE- exploration of rural/urban landscape for 2D work using shape, form, space, colour, texture, pattern in paint. Study ideas/methods/approaches of landscape artists.
Grade 6/Year 7 SELF IMAGE- explore personal identity and create images from observation, memory and imagination using traditional materials and digital media.   WHAT'S IN A BUILDING?- explore ideas, feelings about buildings and spaces, make a design for sculpture in clay or paper.  RECREATING LANDSCAPES-  explore landscape for 2 and 3 dimensional work.  Study artists who use the environment as inspiration and construct a textile based work.
Grade 7/Year 8 OBJECTS AND VIEWPOINTS- explore familiar objects from different viewpoints and abstracting qualities, cubism, still life.  ANIMATING ART-  explore the use of the moving image through films, cartoons, abstract expressionism, pop-art of the '60's.  SHARED VIEW-  study art work from different times and cultures and work together to make a temporary, site-specific work.
Grade 8/Year 9 LIFE EVENTS-  image making of an event in students' own lives, manipulation of visual qualities to evoke strong reactions and represent ideas, 18th/19th century paintings connecting with the present visual culture.  CHANGE YOUR STYLE-  synthesise own ideas from contemporary design to make a new, creative form of textile, ceramic, 3D or body adornment.  \Influence of art on fashion and design.  PERSONAL PLACES, PUBLIC PLACES-  explore public art in own area, research how ideas, values and beliefs have been represented, making a mural or 3D form for a public area.
